Dining tables are family center pieces during the holidays
Hosting a holiday meal
One of the best moments about celebrating the holidays is gathering with friends and family around the table for dinner. Holiday meals are special because they are often one of the few times everyone is home and together again. Efforts should be made to make those precious events feel special by creating a warm and welcoming dining room. Of course choosing the right dining table is crucial. There are as many styles of dining tables on the market as there are decorating tastes and budgets, from luxurious dining tables to humble kitchen tables.
While a gorgeous table in a beautiful large dining room would be a dreamy place to host your holiday meal, what really matters is the conversation, the sense of family and warmth you build around that meal and table.
Choosing your dining room furniture
When investing in a new dining set whether it is for your formal living room or more informal kitchen area you will want it to enhance your space and hopefully last many years to come. It is important that the furniture you choose will suit the space. It should certainly allow for ‘elbow’ room so that guests feel comfortable and not overcrowded. How much space is enough? On average allow 24 to 30 inches per person with a table width of at least 30”. The standard height
of a dining table is between 29 – 30 inches. Take into consideration the legs of the table, they should allow for comfortable seating. A leg at or near the corner, a center pedestal or a trestle table work well. Take care choosing your chairs. Upholstered chairs require more care, do you have messy eaters? Solid wood chairs will last and can be easily matched to your décor by adding a cushion pad. Ideally the dining chair should have a fairly upright back so that your guests can sit comfortably but still have support for their backs. Make sure that the chairs fit well to the table. Make sure that if the table has an apron that you are still able to pull the chair up to the table and sit with room for your legs.
